The V-Dem Institute is releasing four new tools, making it possible to create even more comprehensive and nuanced charts for both beginners and advanced users.
The V-Dem Graphing Tools is an intuitive, accessible and easy to use platform for data visualizations. The platform allows users to analyze 450+ indicators and indices of democracy for all the countries in the world from 1900 to the present day. The reliable and precise nature of the data and lengthy historical coverage is useful not only to scholars studying democracy, but also to governments, practitioners and NGOs. Users enjoy clear access to the indicator information and will be able to export the generated data in csv format.
1. Thematic Comparison
This tool provides a two-year comparison for a selected component and country. Users are able to select a thematic country which they would like to compare between two years. Once the graph is plotted, indicators which appear above the line would have experienced positive changes while the opposite would be true of those below the line. The indicators are also colour coded to depict if they have improved (green), declined (red) or remain the same (grey).
2. Regional Comparison
This tool provides a two-year regional comparison for an indicator or index in a chosen region between two selected years. Once plotted, countries that appear on or very close to the line are seen to have remained at the same level between the two years. Countries above the line would have experienced positive changes while the opposite would be true for countries below the line. The indicators are also colour coded to depict if they have improved (green), declined (red) or remain the same (grey).
3. Contingency Tables
This tool shows sequencing relationships between indicators in a selected category with a comparison between country and region. It investigates how the indicators within the selected category have developed in relation to each other. We have identified the lowest value of each indicator in a selected category before the highest value of the variable in question was reached. The sum of these minimum values is called the contingency conditions.
Once the necessary areas are selected, a table is generated where users can observe the number of contingencies needed to get a maximum and the current number of contingencies that have been met for the country or region in 2017.
4. Low Hanging Fruit Tool
This is an advanced sequencing tool useful for data-driven decision making. It looks at the extent to which selected indicators within a selected region or country need to improve to attain progress in a selected category. The generated table includes the current status of the country or region and the progress made till 2017.
The ‘Min Value’ in the table shows the lowest value of each indicator attained within the selected category and the ‘Current Value’ refers to the current score of the indicator. When looking at the ‘Status’ of the indicator, a star signifies a Low Hanging Fruitwhere the country is close to the ideal. A green tick shows that the indicator has met the criteria and attained the goal while a black cross signifies that the indicator is still far away from achieving the desired goal.
