Based on V-Dem Annual Report 2017, Valeriya Mechkova, Anna Lührmann and Staffan I. Lindberg published an article in the October issue of the Journal of Democracy (”How Much Democratic Backsliding?”, Journal of Democracy 28(4): 162-169).
Democracy is facing challenges across the world, yet alarmist reports of a global crisis of democracy are not warranted. Average levels of democracy globally have declined only slightly and not below levels achieved at the turn of the century. Worrisome trends include the gradual erosion of freedom of expression and association in several countries. More positive signs come from the electoral arena and the transition to democracy of 16 countries over the last ten years – including Tunisia, Nepal and Nigeria.
