Democracy is facing challenges across the world, yet alarmist reports of a global crisis of democracy are not warranted. Worrisome trends include the gradual erosion of freedom of expression and association in several countries. More positive signs come from the electoral arena and the transition to democracy of 16 countries over the last ten years – including Tunisia, Nepal and Nigeria.
