Welcome to the V-Dem Data page where you can download the V-Dem data free of charge!
The Varieties of Democracy Project is releasing new datasets every year around April, smaller updates to the datasets may be released in-between.

Download a V-Dem dataset:

  • 177 countries – data from 1900 to today
  • 350 V-Dem indicators & 45 democracy indices
  • Codebook and other related materials

How to:

  1. Select type of dataset: Country-Year or Country-Date
  2. Select size: V-Dem data only or V-Dem data + data from other sources
  3. Select format: SPSS, STATA, STATA-IC, CSV or EXCEL
  4. Click on the link to download the file. Fill in name, affiliation, and additional information in the pop-up window
  5. The dataset and documentation are all yours!

Suitable for STATA-IC and other software handling a max of 2,000 variables/columns. STATA-IC version excludes HPD intervals for the ordinal scale and standard devation for the relative and original scale of the Measurement Model output.

Type B, C and D indicators and most indices are in Country-Date format. For details on variable types, see the codebook.
