Country Graph

  • V-Dem

V-Dem provides the most comprehensive global dataset on democracy: 350 indicators and indices on a variety of important aspects of democracy! The data cover 173 countries.  Here we offer a tour on using the Online Analysis Tool.

  • Generating a Graph

    Step 1: Select a country.

    Step 2: Select multiple variables.

Step 3: Adjust the year range.

Step 4: To produce the graph, press ‘Generate Graph’.

  • Drilling-Down Function

To see each of the constituent components of an index, use a drill-down function.

Click on an index's line in a graph to activate this drill-down function. You can select and unselect which of the components you want to view by clicking on the text labels on the right-hand side of the graph.

  • Confidence Intervals

V-Dem data are based on the reports of multiple coders, who sometimes diverge in their ratings. In order to deal with such divergences, we provide confidence intervals about the estimated values of each index. The confidence is illustrated by shadows above and below the lines. Larger intervals indicate greater uncertainty about the estimate.

  • Interpreting Graphs

We display details regarding the construction of V-Dem indicators and indices in the "Selected Indictaors" box at the bottom of the page.

Tip! The V-Dem Codebook includes a table entitled ‘Structure of Aggregations – All Indices and Indicators’. This table displays how indicators, components and indices are related, which is helpful for understanding the structure of aggregation.

  • Relative and Original Scales

You can view the V-Dem data on either the ‘relative’ or ‘original scale’ options. When using the default setting of ‘relative scale’ option, all indicators are mapped on a scale between 0 and 4, even if their initial scale is different, allowing for comparisons. Indicators on their original scales can be viewed using the ‘original scale’ option.

Tip! When viewing many indicators in the ‘relative option’, you can view the original scale for one indicator at a time simply by ticking the box next to the indicator.

  • Saving a Graph

You can save a graph by clicking on the "download" at the upper right-hand side of the graph, then selecting your preferred format.

  • Tip!

You can hide the menu for the selection of countries and indicators by pressing the arrow in the top right corner of the box.

In "Selected Indicators" click on an indicator to expand the question text and answer choices.
